Workplace 2030:
Creating the workplace for future generations

BRIEF
Create a vision for the workplace of the future or an aspect of it that responds to the needs and wants of generations to come.

Smart Grid is a single modular unit that allows the user to connect their portable devices with the integrated
wireless technology. The craze for smaller and thinner technology is continuing to branch out, therefore this
unit is ideal for employees who live by their digital device and store all of their information on it.

The screen from the device can be synced and used on the larger display system, or the user can enable a split screen function to access two programmes at once from their device. The unit can be used as an individual work top using the fold out work surface for writing, checking emails and producing quick work, or on its own as a display system, using the innovative technology by Luminoso, integrating carbon fiber in wood to produce a single layer translucent wooden surface. The product on its own is to be wall mounted for support; however two or more can be reconfigured and left free standing using the other unit to sustain it. The numerous configurations allow surfaces for teamwork and individual work, as well as creating private and public spaces.

Smart Grid’s modularity is also enhanced by acting as a partition to minimise acoustic levels throughout the
office or having the ability to be stacked away to provide more space for larger teamwork groups. The
sustainability is embedded throughout the whole structure. It is composed of timber veneer on a plywood
frame, leaving hollow space inside for the unit to remain lightweight and using the least material possible to
ensure that there is no unnecessary material usage. The energy is also generated using a photovoltaic panel to produce energy from nearby light sources, although it can also be left to charge through an AC plug, storing
the energy in the integrated Nano battery, allowing the user to use it in different environments.
